Dental Bridges Pros and Cons

2021-03-25

Sometimes the decision must be made whether or not dental bridges may be right for you. Indeed, any time someone is missing teeth, or their teeth are severely damaged and cannot be restored, the dental bridge option is sometimes the best strategy. There are clear and well-defined dental bridges pros and cons. For example, dental implants are frequently a smart way to replace missing teeth. However, that said sometimes dental implants are not an option for those who, for example, have low jawbone mass concerns. In short, a dental bridge is nothing more than artificial teeth or a row of teeth that are anchored to existing natural teeth.

Natural Teeth Must Be Reduced Down in Size

In some cases, dental bridges may even be attached to dental implants when necessary. It is important to note that there are three main types of bridges in use today. For example, there is the traditional bridge. This type of bridge attaches to healthy teeth between an area where there are missing teeth or a single lost tooth. For this to be successful, the natural teeth must be reduced down in size so crowns can be placed over them. This supports added strength and keeps the bridge secure. The end result is a solid row of teeth that looks attractive and is highly functional. In addition, there is something known as the Maryland bridge.

Implant Supported Bridge

This type of bridge uses a metal structure that is firmly cemented to the back of supporting teeth that keeps the bridge in place. The good news regarding this approach is that it leaves surrounding teeth completely intact. Finally, there is something known as the implant-supported bridge. When there are several teeth missing that must be replaced, an implant-supported bridge is one of the best choices. This typically involves implanting a titanium rod which is nothing more than an artificial metal root that is set in the jawbone. Once this is complete, the bridge can be firmly attached to the implants providing a good solid functional tooth replacement.
