The Effects of Periodontal Disease on Health

2021-03-18

Research has clearly shown that periodontal diseases have a direct and lasting effect on overall health and wellness. As a matter of fact, there is a number of diseases that can stem from poor dental health. For example, everything from diabetes to heart disease and a list of other common diseases can often be traced back to poor dental health. One of the effects of periodontal disease on health is it causes bacteria to invade the body. When this happens, it can spread throughout the body and cause other problems. Systemic diseases are often the result of poor dental hygiene and oral care.

Opportunistic Infections

The problem can work in either direction in that a systemic disease may lead to periodontal disease too. For example, people with diabetes are more likely to develop periodontal disease. Ultimately this can result in increased blood sugar and diabetic complications. Indeed, studies and research have shown that those with diabetes are generally more likely to experience periodontal disease than those who do not have diabetes. This likely has something to do with the fact that those with diabetes are more susceptible to opportunistic infections. Many in the medical industry report that periodontal disease is interrelated with the complications of diabetes.

Increase the Incidence of Heart Disease

More alarming is the fact that those who do not have control of current diabetes-related illness may at a particularly high risk of having periodontal disease. Keep in mind that extreme levels of periodontal disease can have a direct impact on increased blood sugar. Equally of concern is the relationship between gum disease and heart disease. A large body of research has shown that periodontal disease can be directly associated with heart disease. In simple terms, periodontal disease can increase the incidence of heart disease. This is likely due to the inflammatory reaction as a result of periodontal disease.
